Now all you need to do is connect the copper and zinc strips from the set to the clock and the potato using a cable and voilà: electricity will flow.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe way this galvanic experiment works is just as simple: as copper and zinc have different redox potentials, the less noble zinc gives off electrons to the more noble copper. This makes the zinc strips the negative pole and the copper strips the positive pole (electrodes). The potato itself becomes the electrolyte by providing a conductive solution. The formula for this galvanic experiment is as follows: Cu2+ + Zn → Cu + Zn2+.
